Personalized Gift Giving

For many, choosing beautiful and useful products from local businesses is important to them when considering gift giving. Regardless of best intentions and many mental (and written) notes to "don't forget to pick up a gift", this can often fall to the side while attending to our everyday routines. Not to mention the business of actually packaging and wrapping!

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to put together a gift package for a client who was out of town and needed to get a gift to a loved one (ASAP!). We put together one of Louelle's silk scarves, zodiac constellation stationery sets, and of course a hand written card. Packaged it up pretty and shipped it to the birthday girl, all while our client relaxed on the beach!

Scarf Tying 101: Our Go-Tos This Summer

We don't know about you, but as the summer heats up, the last thing we are doing is standing with a blow dryer blasting more heat onto our sweltering bodies.  Between everyday activities and adventuring to new swimming holes, pools, and beaches, we welcome a quick fix to tame our hair and keep us cool.

We are often asked how to wear and tie scarves, so here are our go-to scarf styles with quick how-tos! Any square piece of fabric will do, but of course we're partial to our silk habotai scarves which are durable enough for day but easily dress it up at night. Trust us, ditch your blow dryers, you won't be sorry.

Triangle Wrap

The easiest wrap and a classic pool/beachside staple. *shown here is Louelle's Tropic Scarf.

Ta-da! Doesn't get easier than this one.

Twist Wrap

Pile your hair into a messy top knot, twist, tie, and go! *shown here is a hand painted Agami Scarf by @dre_sketchbook but this wrap also looks great with Louelle's Pineapple Scarf.

1) Place middle of scarf at the nape of your neck and pull ends forward above your head 2) Twist scarf by trading ends (left end goes into your right hand and right end goes into your left hand).

Rosie Wrap

Don't let this wrap intimidate you, with a little practice in the mirror you'll be able to nail it on the fly.  *shown here is Louelle's Kilim Scarf.

1.

Fold into a triangle and fold over once to adjust triangle's size, see the next image to get a feel for how much of a fold you need.

2.

Place middle of scarf at nape of neck, pull sides forward and triangle tip to nose.

3.

Double knot over the triangle tip (square knots work best, right over left then left over right when tying) This is a good time to bobby pin at nape of neck to secure.

4.

Tuck "ear flaps" into themselves, pushing them into the folds.

5.

Wrap side ties to back and double knot at nape of neck.

6.

Twist the triangle tip up and back.

7.

Tuck triangle tip behind top knot.

8.

Secure with bobby pins at nape of neck if desired.

Wedding Invitation Spotlight: Jackets

This week we are showing love to some of our favorite jacketed wedding invitations. From watercolor landscapes to block prints and ombré, these statement invitations are sure to be keepers.

Southern charm, this destination wedding invitation captured the banyon tree lined street where the couple said their "I Dos". The banyan tree motif was carried through their monogram and day-of paper.

Our favorite hand carved floral block print is turned into an incredibly textured jacket for these wedding invitations. Each is hand inked, giving an array of hues and varying character. The silk habotai ribbon is hand dyed and loosely wrapped. The watercolor stripe liner in complimentary colors and variations.

Each of these Adirondack lake vistas featured original hand painted watercolor jacket. These invitations to join the hosts for a weekend of kayaking and hiking at their Adirondack camp pulled from the landscapes viewed throughout the property. The gift of artwork to each very special guest.

We love creating wedding invitation jackets because it is a fantastic way to show your style in a big beautiful way! We can't wait to share the amazing jackets we have in the works for this year's clients!

Wedding Invitations Spotlight: Greenery

We love greenery, whether a watercolor illustration, block print, or sprig of lavender tucked into the banding, it adds a fresh element. Here are a two of our favorite wedding invitations each with their own distinct personality!

Watercolor and succulents cascade over this letterpress wedding suite. Topped off with a beautifully textured linen and velvet dot ribbon, it is sweet, refreshing, and youthful.

Invitations for Keeps

At a time when we are ever conscious of the waste we create and our impact on the planet, what place have invitations and handwritten correspondence that so often ends up in the trash?

I think back to one of my favorite books, Frog and Toad Are Friends, by Arnold Lobel, and how much receiving a letter from his friend meant to Toad, even though he sees him on a regular basis and even though the letter itself was uncomplicated and straightforward. **Those so inclined can catch a claymation version from 1985 (serious throwback) visit here and move along to minute 13:30 for The Letter.

The emotional reaction and feeling of connection one gets from receiving a thoughtful note (no matter how brief) is lifting. It shows an intention and level of importance that is not conveyed through electronic means. It can be personalized and adorned to add elements of fun and further the interaction. Sea glass from a recent trip. A charm that reminded them of you. A small doodle or photo. A special stamp.

Along with custom stationery, the invitations we make for each client are created specifically for them or for that special occasion. Illustrations and artwork are never recycled from one to another. Always from scratch. It allows us to capture a moment in their lives and create a token of that time.

Some wedding invitations are an opportunity to create a lasting piece that not only captures a memory, but continues to be enjoyed in the homes of friends and loved ones for years to come. We love to hear the excitement in our clients' voice when they find that their guests have framed the watercolor prints from their invitation suite.

Written correspondence is dwindling in today's digital world, and there are many easy and even beautiful options out there for e-cards. But the impression and emotion that accompanies thoughtful tangible stationery, with all its color, texture, and depth, remains unmatched.

In the midst of wedding and event invitations, Louelle has been busy creating for upcoming pop-up Stores including the past weekend at Clothesline Festival and upcoming Brainery Bazaars! We were honored to receive a merit award at the Clothesline Festival where we shared our latest stationery, calendars, scarves, and tags, as well as small personal work from Andrea. Come visit us at the Rochester Brainery on October 10th and while you're there stop in and see andrea's "archetypes" exhibit up through the end of october! Our Sweetest Honorees: Baby Showers and Children's Birthdays

We have to admit we have babies on the brain lately as Ashley and her husband (my brother) are expecting TWINS! In honor of this impending motherhood/fatherhood/auntiehood, we wanted to share some of our favorite invitations and shower stylings from baby showers and children's birthdays we have created for.

We love the opportunity to create for little ones and their families, and are partial to nostalgic illustrative themes. And because each illustration is created uniquely for each event, the baby/child/parents get to receive the original artwork to be framed! As we are proponents of nurturing art appreciation from a young age, being a part of "baby's first piece of art" puts huge smiles on our faces!

Lovely Fox Baby Shower

Our first baby shower invitation featured a sweet fox gathering wildflowers. The original watercolor illustration greeted recipients upon opening the wax sealed envelope. Wrapped in vintage swiss velvet ribbon with attached registry tag, the text featured hand lettering and complimentary watercolor. during the shower, guests wrote notes to the little one on custom stationery; well wishes and love to the baby and parents.

IMG_3620.JPG

Meadow Rabbit Baby Shower

Thornton Burgess books and Brer Rabbit inspired our Meadow Rabbit. With a garland of four leaf clovers, this bunny was both sweet and clever. Wrapped with a satin bow tie, the invitations featured front and back watercolor framing.

This was our first opportunity to work with Scratch Bakeshop in bringing our invitations into a new and delicious light. Using our invitation as inspiration, they crafted a beautiful satiny cake, reflecting the clover garland and ribbons. Together with the framed artwork, the dessert table was dreamy.

Fawn Baby Shower

Given a woodland inspiration and a color palette of orange, navy, and grey, this little fawn was created. Envelopes were complete with custom liners featuring our birch tree design and buck wax seal. Again, Scratch Bakeshop created these stunning complementary fawn cookies that were absolute show stoppers. A beautiful wicker bassonette filled with little woodland creatures and our framed artwork was gifted to the parents-to-be!

Mermaid Millie First Birthday

Retro styled mermaid was the theme for this first birthday party. Beautiful weather and a backyard celebration were the setting, while corals, foamy greens, and blues were reflected throughout the party. Some fisherman's netting (and Pirate Booty of course!) decorated the tables while the mermaid birthday cake, by Scratch Bakeshop held court at the dessert table. With red hair like the honoree, this under-the-sea queen now graces the birthday girl's bedroom wall.

We have loved creating these keepsakes for our clients and their children; a wonderful way to capture a moment and memory! xo!

Retro Styled Pool Party

August is upon us, and we've been enjoying the warm balmy weather that is so fleeting here in the Northeast! Lives Styled brought us a vision for a retro vibe pool party, complete with bright pops of candy colors and sleek lines.  Inspired by this concept, we began creating. As an ode to Summer, this season's stationery line features watercolor and letterpress in cool blues, greens, and gold; mixing the relaxed easy flow of water with structured vintage inspired patterns and prints. Each invitation is hand painted and inked, and compliment the letterpress coasters and mini cards.

When it came time to style and photograph the collection, Lives Styled brought it to the next level with their impeccably curated objects and setting; Bringing to life the experience of hosting (or planning) a mid-summer party. We want them styling us and our next gathering head to toe!

To add to our mix of products, Ashley and I are offering hand dyed 100% silk scarves. They are the perfect weight for wrapping your hair on a steamy day or to spice up an evening look. Each is a one-of-a-kind original, and while sometimes we wish we could dye silk all day, we have other loves and invitations to create! So while we only have a few available, we'll try to keep them coming! We have loved the process of creating these beauties and are excited to add them to our lineup.

At Work in the Studio - New Spring/Summer Seasonal Line

We love throwing parties and social gatherings with our loved ones. And we love making these gathering feel thoughtful and special, to reflect our appreciation and joy in experiencing these moments together. Sending beautiful invitations, adding small details throughout the tablescape and setting, and completing the circle with note cards, all lend to a full experience for guests. Sometimes it is the little details that leave an emotional impression. We wanted to create a line that made it easy for others to create lasting memories with their loved ones, whether it was for a life event they were celebrating or simply an excuse to come together and enjoy good company.

Out of this has come our limited edition seasonal line which we will be launching in June 2015. Available in sets of 5, they will include invitations, gift/place cards, and note cards. Also available will be additional artisan pieces that compliment the set. Each will be hand crafted using techniques including block printing, watercolor, and letterpress. To add to the fun, we get to play with the ever talented ladies of Lives Styled to showcase the new line featuring their impeccable styling!

We are hard at work in the studio creating the premier Spring/Summer edition and are excited to share them with you come June. We'll also be sharing snippets of our in studio process along the way so stay tune!

Sister-Friends Reunited

Back from Belize and I could not begin to put into words the beauty of the country. From the reefs and sand, to the jungle and caves (which captured my heart), I was absolutely entranced. Taking a piece of that home with me, feeling energized and inspired, and seeing with new perspective. We've already plunged ourselves back into creating and look forward to sharing the exciting projects to come which include some amazing invitations, personal artwork, and new collaborations. And we hope you all get to toast the upcoming vernal equinox with friends and loved ones as we look forward to rebirth here in the northeast. We know we'll be raising our glasses! Cheers!

The Photoshoot

Problem. Ashley and I realized we had only a handful of photographs together. For two people that spend such enormous amounts of time together, in a world full of people capturing images with their phones, that seemed ridiculous. So we decided to do something about it.

We enlisted our friend Brenna of Brenna Thering Photography  and set to work creating a backdrop that reflected our esthetic.

In our setting we wanted to combine vintage and contemporary pieces to create a fresh yet timeless feeling. An antique throw from Ashley's mom, love seat from my mother, painting by Jim Loveless, and various found items (like the scissors ashley is so lovingly holding), set into this deep green room, created an easy harmony between masculine and feminine, structured and relaxed. Themes that we often see juxtaposed in our design and artwork. Whether it is combining our signature watercolor jackets with letterpress insets or wrapping metal banding over lace, we love how seeming opposites compliment each other in visually interesting ways. WE ALSO BRAVED THE COLD, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPE, another frequent theme in much of our work. and of course, a very regal luna pup, upstaging us all!

This shoot was a chance for us to get silly (very easy for us) and have some beautiful images captured. Here is a look at the fun we had!
